How should I order my Airbnb photos?

Lead with the one photo that shows what makes your place different, then fill the next four spots with the spaces guests care most about, like the main living area, the best bedroom and any standout outdoor space. After the first five, order the rest like a walk through the home, and cut duplicates and photos of things guests can't use.

Why the first five matter most

Airbnb says the first five photos are the most important because they're shown prominently on your listing, and the first one is the large photo that appears in search. Your title and cover photo are the first things guests notice. A guest scrolling search usually decides from those before reading a word of your description.

A simple order that works for most listings

  1. Cover: the shot that's unmistakably yours. A view, a pool, a striking room, a unique feature. Horizontal, bright, uncluttered.
  2. Main living space: a wide shot so guests understand the size and feel.
  3. Best bedroom or the sleeping setup, especially if it's unusual (lofts, futons, bunks).
  4. The feature people mention in reviews. Read your last few dozen reviews. If guests keep praising the garden, the deck or the art, that photo belongs up here, not at the end.
  5. Kitchen or outdoor space, whichever is stronger for your guests.

After that, group photos by room in the order a guest would walk through: entry, living, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor, then the neighborhood.

What to cut or move down

Photos you're probably missing

Check that every space guests can use has at least one photo, which Airbnb also asks for in the photo tour. The most common gaps are the shower, every bed (not just the room), the parking spot or entry, and the nearby park, beach or street that your reviews praise.

How to change the order on Airbnb

In your host dashboard, open the listing, go to the photo tour, choose All photos, and drag to reorder. You can pick any photo and make it the cover. Airbnb's photo tour sorts photos into rooms automatically, so check each room is labeled correctly and add captions for details the photo doesn't show. Changes can take a little while to appear.

Shooting tips from Airbnb's own guidance

Shoot horizontally, because photos are cropped to squares in search. Use natural light, turn off the flash, shoot at eye level without tilting, and mix wide, mid-range and detail shots. Upload high-resolution files.

FAQ

How many photos should lead my listing?

Focus on the first five. Airbnb shows them prominently and uses the first as the search photo, so those five should be your strongest and most distinct.

Should my cover photo be the outside of the house?

Only if the outside is what makes it special. For most places, the best interior or the standout feature (a view, pool or unusual room) works better than a plain exterior.

Is it bad to have a lot of photos?

Not by itself, but duplicates and weak shots make guests scroll past what matters. Cut near-identical angles and keep one strong photo per idea.

Should I show flaws, like a tiny bathroom?

Yes. One honest photo prevents surprises, and surprised guests are the ones who leave low accuracy ratings.

Want someone to do this for your listing?

Listing Lift reads your whole listing and reviews and sends a one-page makeover with the title, description, photo order and quick wins. $49 for the first 10 orders, then $99, by email, no calls.
